What does buying gifts have to do with Christmas?

If Christmas is about the birth of the Christian savior, what does buying gifts have anythnig to do with that? I understnad families having dinner and getting together to celebrate his birth. I also understand sending other people cards that wish them a Merry Christmas. But how does gift giving and people making lists of "what they want for Christmas" have anything to do with the holiday?





Has Christmas become too commercial or did they always give gifts on Christmas a thousand years ago?

the gifts under our trees represent the gifts that the Wisemen brought to Jesus. and Christmas is only as commercial as you allow it to be. if u want it to be all about gifts and stuff like that and receiving then so be it. but there are those of us that actually care about the reason for the holiday. i dont get more than 2 gifts usually. this year is a little crazy.

Reply:Christmas really isnt about the birth of Jesus Christ, its almost certain he wasn't even born on that date. The holiday was created over time socially and now it has evolved into this. It's the one time the majority of us have in common that we can relax with family and chill, it gets our spirits up. Gifts are just one of the characteristics of the celebration of Christmas.
