The gift receipients are family and friends, Americans and Canadians aged 25-65. I kind of want to stay away from really gaudy gifts like slogan t-shirts.
Can you suggest some good souvenirs/gifts from Singapore?
I usually get my family key chains...very affordable.
Reply:There are nice gifts from the singapore art museum gift shop, and also nice stuff at the Raffles Hotel gift shop. Or just get chicken rice paste from supermarkets for them to make chicken rice back home. hehehe.
Reply:Take some great pictures while you're still there and have them turned into classical-looking paintings. This can be done at http://www.paintyourlife.com for a reasonable fee and according to your specifications!
If you are looking for an affordable gift urgently, the same company also has a studio for oil paintings reproductions. So, visit them at http://www.oil-paintings-reproductions.c... and take a look at their 'stock on sale'.
Reply:If you have any family/friends interested in stamps, you might want to head down to the local post office or the Singapore Stamp Museum (located in central Singapore). They have Singapore stamps for sale and it makes a nice gift. It's light and you don't have to lug it around!
Reply:You haven't specified a price, but one gift that I have given (on several occasions) is a gilded Vanda Miss Joachim orchid. You can also get the orchids set in resin. They're usually available as a brooch or necklace, and make very nice gifts for female family members.
Another gift I have purchased has been from the gift shop on Sentosa Island. They are not "brand name" perfumes; so unfortunately, I don't remember the name. They're in a white box, and available in several different scents. (I bought the brown one, and it's very nice.)
I've also bought pewter figurines and jade figurines of family member's Chinese Zodiac.
But if you are restricted price-wise... a lot of the "$2 shops" have figurines of 3-legged toads (good feng shui for bringing wealth), the "laughing Buddha" (Maitreya), Kuan Yin (Godess of Mercy), etc., if you have family members that like nicknacks.
If you have family members that have an affinity for a particular gemstone... head over to the Fu Lu Shou complex. You can pick up some beautiful bracelets or necklaces in lapis lazuli, peridot, amethyst... pretty much any gem you care to nominate.
Hope this gives you ideas for some "different" souvenirs. Although the best present you can ever bring back from your travels is yourself IMO.
Reply:Amen with a few of the suggestions in here: takes tons of pictures and bring home a piece of sg by making chicken rice for your friends!
Prima Taste actually sells prepackaged chicken rice mixes and other similarly packaged local delecacies that you can mix and cook back home. I think you might be able to get your hands on these babies at any supermarket.
Not sure if it's still there but I know that there's a Prima Taste Store/resto at Center Point... go past the grocery and drug store, make your way up the elevator and it'll be right there.
other suggestions: spices, unique chine cutlery, durian (? or you might want to stick with durian chips if you don't want to risk getting it dumped in a bin at the airport?), chinese operatic items, chinese herbs/medicines...
