What gifts do college students like to receive from friends and family?

My daughter's friend is away from home attending college in another city. I'd like to send some treats and little surprises from back home. Any suggestions?

money. Money, and oh, money.

but seriously, money.

And my sister in law gives my college kids a gift card to a local grocery store so that they can go buy groceries when they run out of

money.

My daughter's college has an alumni association that puts together gift basket types of things like a "finals survival kit." I sent one of those to her and she loved it! It had things like a mug and hot cocoa mixes, some candy like M%26amp;M's, skittles, a T-shirt with the college logo on it, gum, cookies, a small book of inspirational quotes, etc. Anything you would like, I bet, they would like!

How sweet you want to send to your daughter's friend. She will love getting something in the mail.
Reply:money, and food is enough for them, cause that's really all they need to really survive.
Reply:Beer

Reply:starbucks, chilis, grocery giftgards.

any kind of giftcards!
Reply:Care packages of their favorite snacks.
Reply:Food is always good, the whole starving college student thing isn't a lie. Also, money is greatly appreaciated because most college students don't have time to work. Other than that, socks, little pieces of jewelry, earrings, beaded necklaces, books (though this is risky because some might not like to read), notebooks, pens pencils, lotions, soaps, things that you'd find in gift baskets are always good.
Reply:Homemade treats like cookies, brownies... my dad even sent homemade beef jerky! Stuff they can't make if they don't have a kitchen, or get at the grocery store. I also liked cutesy things for decorating. Usually you can't burn candles in a dorm, so I loved those light rings that you put oils in and put on a light bulb. They're great for making things smell good, and pretty cheap. (I get 'em at WalMart by the candles). Cards, pictures... ect. Anything really. It's just nice to get mail. :)
Reply:checks and/or gift cards
Reply:When I went away to college, my grandmother gave me a big stack of postage-paid envelopes and postcards, which was really useful for staying in touch with everyone. And I got a laundry basket, a roll of quarters, and a bottle of detergent from one of my friends. Along the way, bulk bags of pasta, gourmet soup mixes (just add water!), canned goods (touching on necessary food groups), and gift cards to various places were all delightful. My favorite gift cards, for the daily woes of life, are from grocery stores (make sure one's in her area), a place like Staples or Best Buy (to help with school supplies and computer needs), or the gas station (if she has a car).

But I have to say, that after months of privation and sacrifice, it was quite often fun to get a gift certificate to a restaurant, coffeehouse, or a department store. Having a free lunch and being able to take advantage of a good sale, while not having to spend lots of money, is quite the refreshing experience.

Other good giftcard ideas are amazon.com and drugstore.com. That way, she can choose whether to get something useful or, if that's all taken care of, to get something fun.
Reply:Home made food!!!!!!!!!!!! Cookies, brownies etc etc Maybe a gift card or money but food is always a good bet!!!
Reply:Money is always useful. Candy might be good. Dorms usually have microwaves. You could send bags of microwavable popcorn.
Reply:Money Money Money
Reply:IPOD.
Reply:When I was in college (couple years ago) I really liked getting things I needed... like money, or shampoo, or something to decorate my dorm room, stuff like that. Now that I know more about dorm rooms... you might want to consider getting her those egg shell foam things to put on her bed because dorm beds are really uncomfortable!

I'd really stick to things she needs cuz I know it's hard sometimes to get those things... maybe even a gift certificate to a restaurant in her area, cuz god knows cafeteria food is horrible! =)
