What are memorable gifts you have to your child on their first birthday?

I mean toys in particular you remember giving them and also possible keepsake gifts. My son's 1st bday is this weekend and I want to get him something special.

What are memorable gifts you have to your child on their first birthday?
I bet the best keepsake you can give your baby is a handmade portrait or painting made from one of his most cute photos. Just send the photo(s) to the guys at http://www.paintyourlife.com and they will create wonders out of that innocent looking photo. You will definitely like it, and so will everyone who sees it. The service is fast and fairly priced. Take a look and judge for yourself! The same company also makes wonderful photo prints on canvas in various designs. Visit http://www.photo-print-on-canvas.com
Reply:You should set him up with some kind of trust fund or something where money will be saved up for him to use later in life (like for college).
Reply:I gave my son the book, "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. I wrote a special message in it for him to save when he's older. Along with more toys than a toddler needs, I bought him a cloth party has with, "It's my first birthday!" printed on it that I saved for his baby box. Finally, we had a big poster board on which everyone wrote him a special message. We had it framed to save for him.

Reply:engraveable items, my son had his 1st in november of last year. we went insane on the gifts, but i think like a rocking horse or age appropriate toys (maybe a mini ball pit for the house! we got one of those as gifts, our son loves it. or maybe a piggy bank with his name engraved on it) will be great. also i had a BIG plastic "floor mat" underneath his high chair (for spills). after the party was over, i had each guest sign their name and write a short message to our little guy. I kept that in a box for him when he grows up!

have fun, and take LOTSSSSSSSSSSSS of pictures! i was so busy with the preparation and getitng things in order that i didnt take very many pictures, something i regret!! get guests who take pictures to make you doubles too!
Reply:i gave each of my kids a toy that i had when i was young. they like to hear about me being a little girl. i also write in a journal for each of them whenever i want to. i do this because i didn't really know my mom and some day, when i am gone, i would like them to experience themselves through my eyes a little. they will not get the books until they are old enough to understand them, but at age 1, they don't really get 'meaning' so much, but you do.
Reply:We are giving him a swingset, and a few smaller things he can play with. I don't think they really remember at this age, but it will be on tape and photo! I know my son loves a little lamb that I got for a shower gift for him. He sleeps with it each night still. I'm going to keep it for his children.

Oh, and we opened a GET account. Guaranteed Education Tuition. It's a fund that buys his college tuition at today's prices...to be used at almost any college in the US.
Reply:My son's 1st birthday is Sunday. I am putting a picture frame together with a picture him at 1, his father at 1 and me at 1 and writing something nice by our pictures. I'm sure he will appreciate it in about 30 years.

I'm also getting a copy of the book Dr. Seuss "Happy Birthday" and having everyone sign it and write something special to him at his birthday party on Sunday.
Reply:People don't remember when they're 1. Just get him some toys and don't expect him to carry it around all his life.
Reply:Lockets are very special. Put in your picture to make it even more special.
Reply:Give him something that he would love. It is more memorable to take lots of photos, keep all his cards and the candles from his birthday cake. My son is 7 now and he loves to look at his first birthday photo album and the cards etc. It gives him the memory that he would not be able to remember with out the physical evidence.

Toys come and go.

IF you have to give a gift a great bear, or monkey works too, my sister still has her bear and she is 40.
